What is Recreation Therapy?

Recreation Therapy uses play, movement, and creative expression to help clients achieve emotional, physical, cognitive, and social goals. It’s where clinical care meets lived experience and where young adults begin to remember what fun, freedom, and belonging feel like.

Our Approach: Structured Freedom

We keep things intentional, but not rigid.

Here’s what clients can expect:

Weekly Recreation Therapy Group

A three-hour experiential session blending activity with processing. We explore how the challenges and victories of each experience mirror recovery.

Daily Afternoon Recreation

Led by a Recovery Coach, these activities keep clients active, social, and engaged—adding lightness and play to their days in treatment.

Rotating Monthly Experiences

Each month looks different. One week might be Jiu Jitsu, the next could be pottery, surf lessons, or golf. It keeps things fresh, inspiring, and real.

Cove Program Favorites – Women’s Community

Equine Therapy: Working with horses demands presence. When clients feel anxious or frustrated, the horse mirrors it back. Through riding and care, women learn emotional regulation, patience, and calm leadership.

Yoga: Monthly sessions begin with an open check-in. Clients share how they’re feeling and co-create the tone for the class. Mindfulness becomes muscle memory.

Kickboxing: This crowd-favorite workout invites clients to release stress, explore boundaries, and feel their strength.

Creek Program Favorites – Men’s Community

Golf: A par-3 course turns into a classroom for patience and focus. Clients reflect on how persistence on the fairway connects to persistence in recovery.

Bowling: A favorite group outing that reminds our men how to enjoy life again—through laughter, teamwork, and a bit of healthy competition.

Rock Climbing: Fear, perseverance, and physical fitness collide. Every ascent becomes an opportunity to process courage and celebrate growth.

The Therapeutic Layer

Every activity in Recreation Therapy is followed by guided processing. These conversations uncover lessons hidden in motion. Lessons about fear, control, connection, and recovery itself.

These reflections bridge action and insight, turning recreation into revelation.

The Science of Play in Recovery

Research shows that therapeutic recreation improves emotional regulation, reduces stress, and builds resilience. For our dual-diagnosis clients, it offers a powerful counterbalance to anxiety and depression, supporting whole-person wellness across mind and body.

Momentum’s approach is guided by clinical expertise and human experience. Every Recreation Therapy session is designed to:

  • Activate neural pathways for reward and motivation
  • Rebuild confidence and competence
  • Reinforce positive peer relationships
  • Support long-term engagement in sober living
